Sacramento and Major Cities in California – March 5, 2022 – LEAD-K Family Services, a program of NorCal Services for Deaf & Hard of Hearing, are pleased to announce the First Annual “Love & Literacy” event for families with Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. This family fun event will be hosted from 10am to 2pm in 7 different locations across California, including Sacramento, Bay Area, Fresno, Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, and San Diego See link for exact locations: https://norcalcenter.org/love-and-literacy/
Love & Literacy aims to promote language acquisition for Deaf & Hard of Hearing children during their first five years of life, the most critical timeframe to build language capacity in American Sign Language (ASL) and/or English. Without this support, Deaf children have language delays with 90% of these babies born to “Hearing” parents unfamiliar with resources for coaching early language acquisition. Activities at this event include demonstrations on how to read to your Deaf child, ASL Story Telling, informational and child-fun booths, games, refreshments, and puzzles that promote language acquisition. Each family will receive a free storybook to read with their child.
“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to partner with many local organizations, including deaf mentors, local early start education programs, healthcare, libraries, museums, and others, toward engaging families.” said Sheri Farinha, CEO and Principal Investigator for federal grant from public health authority (HRSA), Coordinator for California’s Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI).
“This is a wonderful Deaf community-based event that gives the families of Deaf and hard of hearing children the opportunity to learn how to incorporate literacy in their homes by learning from Deaf adults who will be there as storytellers.” Said Julie Rems-Smario, Ed.D., Co-EHDI Coordinator, Early Language and Education Programs Consultant at California School for the Deaf.
